NSCM's 3rd season begins with a spooky October concert in Salem: Macabre String Quartets
Salem Classical and North Shore Chamber Music presents a chilling trio of works to kickoff the Halloween and NSCM season. Macabre String Quartets will be performed by the NSCM Quartet on Sunday October 9th at 7 PM at Salem Old Town Hall in Salem, MA.
The program begins with a Suite from soundtrack to Hitchcock's classic thriller Psycho (1960) by composer Bernard Herrmann. This music, considered the fourth greatest movie score of all time by the American Film Institute, highlights the darker-shrieking side of the normally warmly-inviting string instruments. Following the famously terrifying death-by-string-quartet will be Dmitri Shostakovich's greatest String Quartet No. 8 (1960) composed a month after Psycho's premiere. Dedicated to the "victims of fascism and war," the songs of oppressed peoples and dances of death are interwoven with highly personal music. Composed in three days as a cathartic means of suicide-prevention, the 8th Quartet is permeated with self-quotations and his musical moniker DSCH motive, exposing his struggle with disease and reluctance of joining the Communist party in Soviet Russia. Closing the evening is the tremendous Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" String Quartet (1826). Composed in the final years of Schubert's shortened life this is another testament of the struggle against death. Considered one of the greatest in the genre, this work features Schubert's theme from his earlier eponymous song and a Tarantella dance to ward off death.
Presented by Salem Classical, another great concert series on the North Shore, this evening concert is a great way to enjoy some hauntingly beautiful and at-times frightening music. The NSCM Quartet includes Guest Artists Sarah M. Skinner, violin & Rebecca Hallowell, viola along with NSCM Co-Founders Melissa Bull, violin & Scott Thomas Lesser, cello. See more information on the October Concert page and at SalemClassical.com. $10 Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
